Attack! Hair pull!!

Wednesday’s lecture on gender representations in videogames unpacked some ideas on how both male and female sex is portrayed. The idea of a possible sexist and stereotypical image of the both sex is discussed, and especially the female who is represented as the submissive – or ‘the damsel in distress.’ This could be due to the fact that majority of the game producers realize that the male gamers are the main consumers of the videogames, although there are growing population of female gamers these days. Knowing this, the game makers, majority of them being men, understands the needs that male gamers feel when playing videogames; visual pleasure.

The picture shows a Japanese made pro wrestling game, which only features female wrestlers. Choice is given among number of different characters with different characteristics and looks, however, they all share the same base when it comes to their appearance - that is, they're generally very attractive and pretty and great majority of all characters has enlarged breasts with big, sparkling eyes. This is very common and actually it's almost a must for all Japanese videogame characters to be like these two in the picture.

Of course it's not just the Japanese made videogames that contains such stereotypical examples of this representations of female but it's where it reaches the highest peak. Plus, look closely at the picture and see what kinds of attack techniques are there for you to use!
